Montana State (15-5) opened the match winning the doubles point from the Cougars with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. In singles play, sophomore Marek Gebicki captured the No. 2 spot with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Richard Dasek.
MSU’s No. 1 singles standout Federico Ueltschi dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 decision to Erik Nyman, while No. 5 singles player Adam Stutts also going the distance. Stutts dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 decision to BYU’s Ivan Kokufin.
“We were in the match,” said MSU head men’s coach Mike Phillips. “We lost 5-2, but with a few breaks here and there, we could’ve beaten BYU 4-3.
“I was very happy with the way we competed, and although we came up short, this was an outstanding match in terms of preparation for the Big Sky tournament,” Phillips added. “We’re playing our best tennis at the right time of the season.”
MSU will be the No. 1 seed at the Big Sky Conference championships next week in Ogden, Utah. MSU will play the lowest remaining seed on Friday, April 30 at 2 p.m. If the seedings hold, the Bobcats would face the winner of Northern Arizona/Montana in the semifinals.
