Montana State's track and field program added to its jumps crew and its versatility by landing three high school standouts, MSU jumps coach Tom Eitel announced on Thursday.
Pole vaulters Brittany Speirs from Huron, SD and Elouise Rudy from Woodland Park, CO add talent to MSU's vaunted pole vault crew, while multi-event standouts Meghan Bucy of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kevin Ludwig of Telluride, CO, will join the MSU track squad next year. "These four will really help us maintain our legacy of excellence in the pole vault, and will enhance our versatility," Eitel said.
Bucy is a jumper from O'Gorman High in Sioux Falls, and is expected to train as a heptathlete at MSU. She has posted best marks of 36-2 in the triple jump, 5-4 in the high jump, 2:21 in the 800, and 3,920 in the heptathlon. She has placed in the high jump and triple jump three times each at the state meet, and is a state champion triple jumper. She also helped lead her gymnastics team to three straight state titles. "Meghan is a very good athlete has a bright future as a heptathlete," said MSU jumps and multi-events coach Tom Eitel. "She will have an opportunity to specialize in the jumps here, and I expect her to really improve in those events."
Ludwig is a two-time state triple jump champion at Telluride High, and also won the long jump and 100m last year. An all-around athlete, Ludwig was a four-year varsity football and basketball player, and will train as a decathlete. "Kevin has the size and speed to developa fine track athlete. He has trained at 9,500 feet, and when he has access to our facilities he should really take off," Eitel said.
Rudy was the Colorado runner-up in the pole vault last spring, and holds the state indoor record with a jump of 12-1. "Eli is 5-10, and I look for tall vaulters," Eitel said. "She has long arms, which gives her a big advantage on her takeoff, and is very athletic. She has a great future in our program."
Speirs is a two-time state pole vault runner-up. She is also a three-time state qualifier in gymnastics. "Brittany is very athletic," Eitel said. "A background in gymnastics is really an advantage for a vaulter. She has good size at 5-8, and also has good speed."
