Bobcat Men's Tennis Team Downs Sacramento State; Earn No. 1 Seed

Montana State (14-4) jumped out to an early 3-1 led after capturing the doubles point and winning Nos. 1 and 4 singles, where Federico Ueltschi and Braden Olson each won in straight sets, respectively.
MSU’s usually steady Nos. 2 and 3 singles players Marek Gebicki and Tejeshwara Chigateri each lost in straight sets to help the Hornets tie the match at 3-3.
The final two matches of the day went the distance.
Sophomore Jake Berriochoa, playing at No. 6 singles, rallied from an opening set loss to record a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory to secure the victory for the Bobcats. The win also earned the Bobcats a first-round bye and the No. 1 seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament in two weeks.
Sacramento State’s Warwick Foy won the final match with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
“Jake (Berriochoa) played the best match of his collegiate career,” Phillips said. “He came up big with a lot of pressure on his back.
“Our doubles play was exceptional and I’m very happy with the way we competed.”
The Bobcat women dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 28 Sacramento State; however, MSU took 30 games from the Hornets, the most of any Big Sky opponent this season.
“Obviously, Sacramento State is an awesome team, but give our kids credit,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “We competed and played great tennis the whole match. We are a very young team and I’m proud of the way they battled.
“Even though we came up short, we’ll use this experience to gain some momentum for the Big Sky tournament,” Albrecht added.
Both the Bobcat men’s and women’s teams will host Eastern Washington next week.
