ABOUT THE BOBCATS
Montana State closes its season this week at the Big Sky Championships at Goodyear, Ariz. MSU and the other seven league teams will play on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Palm Valley GC beginning at 7:30 am each day.
COMINGS AND GOINGS
Last Time Out
Montana State played a quick five rounds of golf in two tournaments over the course of seven days from April 5-11. The Bobcats finished 12th of 13 at the BYU Dixie Classic April 5-6, shooting a three-round 991. After a quick trip home, the ‘Cats fired a two-round 658 to finish 13th of 13 at the Peg Barnard Memorial at Stanford.

The Bobcats close their 2003-04 season this week, traveling to the Big Sky Conference Championships at Goodyear, AZ. The surroundings won’t be new for the Bobcats, who will be playing the Palm Valley course that the team hosted its Bobcat Dessert Classic in early March. The Bobcats face a strong conference field, led by defending champion Portland State, the team that finished 12th, 15 strokes ahead of MSU at Stanford. Montana State finished sixth at the Big Sky Championships last year, and were picked to finish seventh at this year’s conference meet by the league’s coaches.

Team Notes
Montana State closes its season this week at the Big Sky Championships, an even at which the team has not fared well lately... MSU finished sixth last year, and has not finished in the top half of the Big Sky standings since 1998... no Bobcat has earned all-conference honors since Lyndsie Jensen and Katie Oliphant in 2001... no Bobcat has won the tournament since Jen McGregor in 1995.

This week’s Big Sky Championships bring to a close the career of senior Tiffani Spring, MSU’s lone senior... Spring has led the Bobcats all seasonbut has struggled lately... Spring has played as the top Bobcat in five of the team’s seven tournaments to this point, but slipped to fourth last week after shooting an 81-87/168 at Stanford... Spring shot below 80 in 10 of her first 11 rounds of the season, but has broken 80 in only one of her past five rounds covering the last two tournaments... Kristina Kurcinka is playing the best golf of her Bobcat career, averaging just over 80 in her last five rounds... Kylie Anderson has been wildly erratic since the spring season began, firing two out of her nine rounds in the 70s, but three of 87 or higher and two in the 90s.

Brittany Basye, a former state champion at Billings Central and WAC Champion at New Mexico, is in her first season as MSU head coach. She was Dan Davies’ assistant for three seasons. Basye was WAC Player of the Year in ‘94, was ranked 17th nationally at one point, and qualified for ‘95 U.S. Open.

“We didn’t hit the ball very well in the last two tournaments, and we didn’t play as well as we can. We worked hard between the Stanford tournament and the Big Sky Championships, and I think we are getting back on track. We need to improve in all facets of the game, and we need to become more consistent in all facets of the game. We really need to chip and putt better, but we also need to strike the ball better and more consistently. Tiffani has struggled a little bit lately, but Kristina Kurcinka has really stepped up lately and Erica Leslie has played better. We have the players to compete in the conference meet, we just need to have them all put it together for three rounds.”
