'Cats Host Home Track Meet Saturday

THIS WEEK’S ACTION
Montana State host the MSU Invitational this weekend, a non-scoring open format meet that begins Saturday at 11 am at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex. MSU will host Montana and the University of Mary. The meet is projected to run until around 4 pm.

At the MSU Invitational
Montana will bring several top-flight athletes to the MSU Invitational this weekend. The Grizzlies beat MSU in a dual in Missoula two weeks ago, although the official Bobcat-Grizzly dual will be held in Bozeman on May 1. Scott McGowan leads the league in the 1500m, while Jas Gill is the loop’s top high jumper. On the women’s side, Mariah Guilfoyle is the top long hurdler.
Peak Performers
The trio of distance runner Casey Jermyn and throwers Blake Jackson and Jen Allen are three of the dominant performers in the Big Sky. Each are league leaders in at least one event, and have been dominant. Allen has been the Big Sky Conference’s women’s field events athlete of the week twice, while Jermyn (men’s track) and Jackson (men’s field) have each grabbed league top performer honors once each.
Personnel Palaver
MSU’s health has improved in the past two weeks, but the Bobcats still have several knicks and bruises with which to contend. The distance events should get a boost from Kevin Clary and Brett Winegar, while Steve Heberly in the sprints and Amy Jones in the high jump are probable. Tory Shaffer, a freshman from Billings who decided to join the squad in January, will make her Bobcat debut this weekend in the sprints this weekend, as well.
League Leaders
Casey Jermyn is the only Bobcat runner to hold the top spot on the Big Sky best performances list this week, and is the only MSU runner in the top four of any running event. Blake Jackson leads the Big Sky in the discus, is second in the shot put, and fourth in the hammer throw, while Ed Keefe is first in the pole vault and Joel Walthall is fourth in the javelin. Jen Allen leads the league in the shot put, and is second in the discus and hammer throw. Amanda Emslie is first in the javelin, while Lindsey Gill is third.

“Casey Jermyn, Blake Jackson and Jen Allen will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend. I don’t want to say this is Casey’s last chance to qualify for the NCAA 10,000, but that’s his mission. The auto mark is 29 flat. Casey’s probably not ready for that, but I’ve felt for some time that he’s ready to run 29:15 or so, and that would give him an excellent shot at the NCAA meet. This will be a good competition for Jen and Blake because it’s a big meet that really replicates the feel of an NCAA meet. Also, Ed Keefe is going to Lafayette to compete in the pole vault in what we think is a strong meet. The focus at our meet will be improvement and qualifying for the Big Sky meet and regional meet. With Montana and Mary coming we know we’ll have a very good field. What typically happens at a meet like this is that our throwers go crazy. They are so comfortable in our rings that we usually get really good marks. We’ll have a lot of kids competing this weekend, so this is an exciting opportunity for a lot of kids. It’s also a great chance to showcase our nice new facility. This will be our first home meet since the Big Sky Championships last May.”
