Bobcats Head to Great Falls

Travis Lulay is in only his second spring camp at Montana State, but it doesn't take the junior quarterback long to pinpoint the key element of spring drills.
"Spring is all about improvement," said Lulay, who leads the Bobcats into the team's first spring scrimmage on Saturday. MSU will hold its annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage at 5 pm at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls. "The big key in the work we've done so far this spring is execution and efficiency. We need to continue that on Saturday."
While Lulay watches for continued improvement, particularly from his offense, fifth-year head coach Mike Kramer has something less quantifiable on his mind. "I will be looking for the positive use of all our energy," Kramer says. "This team has shown tremendous emotion and spirit, and I think we'll see a pretty good example of that on Saturday in Great Falls."
Kramer said that Saturday's scrimmage won't necessarily be geared toward evaluating either the running or passing games, but he'll keep an eye on both. "I want to see how our wide receivers and running backs play against a veteran defense."
That defensive squad, which has led the Big Sky Conference in total defense for three consecutive years, will be somewhat short-handed on Saturday. Starting defensive tackles Ray Sebestyen and Beau Clark are shelved with injuries, giving rise to playing opportunities for Great Falls natives Nick Gilchrist and Aaron Papich.
"Those two guys have opportunities in front of them," Kramer said. "They are both playing well and making improvements."
Redshirt running backs Jason Gathing, a junior college transfer who came to MSU as a linebacker and redshirted last fall, and freshman Dan McInerney from Billings, will each run with the first offense on Saturday. "They've both shown some good signs," Kramer said.
Saturday's scrimmage is expected to last around 90 minutes.
