Montana State Men’s Tennis Downs Air Force, Bobcat Women Drop Match to Weber State
March 7, 2004 – BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The Montana State men’s tennis team upset Air Force for the first time in school history, 5-2, Saturday evening in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“It was a huge win,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “We had never beaten Air Force and this really gives us a lot of confidence for the remainder of the season. The guys are really coming together and having a lot of fun.”
Montana State (6-2) opened the match winning the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The Bobcats then captured Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles to earn the victory. The Bobcats were paced by No. 1 singles player Federico Ueltschi, who notched a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win over nationally ranked Shannon Buck.
The Montana State women’s tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Weber State, Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point, the ‘Cats received wins from Vera Vasileva and Laurel Brown at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. However, Weber State battled back and won Nos. 3 and 4 singles in three sets to take a 3-2 match lead. WSU’s Karla Pretorius notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to give the Wildcats the win. Montana State’s Anna Hockett closed the final score to 4-3 with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Kate Ennenga.
“We played outstanding tennis and really battled,” said Bobcat women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “Vera (Vasileva) and Laurel (Brown) did a great job, and playing without Ivette Duran (wrist), our younger kids really stepped-up and did a nice job.”
Both the Bobcat tennis teams will be in action next Friday as the men travel to Idaho State, while the women will play at Weber State.
