Montana State distance runners Ariana Lee and Casey Jermyn each took advantage of running at sea level, posting season's best marks and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Seattle on Saturday.
Lee, a senior from Lander, Wyo. who was the Big Sky's Track MVP this year, finished third in the 5,000 meters. Her mark of 16:42.38 is a school record, and is the sixth-best mark in Big Sky Conference history. She was three seconds under the NCAA Provisional Qualifying standard. Jermyn, a junior from Plains, finished eighth in the 5,000 with a mark of 14:02.12. His mark is the second-best in school history and the fifth-best in Big Sky Conference history.
As good as the performances were, MSU coach Dale Kennedy said neither are likely to land Lee or Jermyn in the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., next weekend. "Ari and Casey really ran well, but it doesn't look like either one will quite make it into the NCAA Meet. We'll find out for sure (on Sunday), but it doesn't look like they'll be quite enough."
Several other Bobcats were in action this weekend, as well. In Seattle, Kevin Clary ran the 3,000 in 8:09.00, just off the NCAA Provisional mark; Jen Allen finished fourth in the weight throw (57-11) and seventh in the shot put (47-11), neither of which were improvements; and Blake Jackson was seventh in the shot put (52-4).
At the Intermountain Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho, Carra Greyn was third (43-4), Christine Creveling fifth (42-3.25), Karen Helvey seventh (40-1.5), and Megan Lee eighth (39-9) in the shot put; Jonathan Gibson won the 3,000 (8:31.90); Josh Henigman posted the second-best weight throw in school history and finished second (61-9.75); Tanner Rauk (54-9.5) was second in the shot put; and Lynn Craver was first (55-11.5), Megan Lee second (55-9.5), Karen Helvey third (55-5.5), Carra Greyn fourth (52-9.5), and Lisa Lord fifth (50-7.5) in the weight throw.
