The Montana State women’s basketball team entered March like a lion and finished the Big Sky Conference regular-season with four straight victories after notching a 67-58 win over Eastern Washington, Saturday night in Worthington Arena.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” said MSU junior Kati Burrows. “Eastern Washington is a very good team and it was a hard-fought game.”
Burrows, a 5-foot-10 forward from Bozeman, ended the night with a game-high 22 points, while adding a career-high 14 rebounds. Also posting a double-double was Sheila Hutchison with 18 points and ten rebounds. Bobcat senior Belinda Stubbs also hit double-digits with a career-high 14 points.
Montana State (14-13, 6-8) was without the services of junior Jana Smith with a strained right hamstring.
“We had some kids come in and step up,” said Bobcat head coach Robin Potera-Haskins, referring to Smiths’ absence. “And, our upperclassmen also played very hard, which set the tone for the rest of the team.”
Junior Hillary Scott was one player that gave the Bobcats a boost. The native of West Jordan, Utah, finished with seven points, her biggest point production since notching seven points against Sacramento State on Jan. 29.
The first half featured 11 lead changes, before Eastern Washington (12-15, 5-9) went on an 8-2 run in the final two minutes to take a 31-28 advantage at intermission.
In the second stanza, MSU opened with an 18-8 run to take a 46-39 lead following a Burrows basket. Eastern Washington answered back and pulled to within 52-51 with 5:44 left on a three-pointer by Tiffany Schmidt.
However, the Bobcats countered with an 11-2 run sparked by back-to-back baskets by Stubbs to give MSU a 63-53 advantage with 1:42 remaining. MSU converted four-of-four free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Eastern Washington was paced in the loss by Kathleen Nygaard with 18 points and six rebounds, while Felice Moore added 13 points and Julie Page 10.
Montana State will face Northern Arizona in the first-round of the Big Sky Conference tournament next Thursday in the Missoula. The other first-round game will feature EWU against Weber State.
