The win clinched MSU’s 13th appearance in the Big Sky Conference tournament and gave the Bobcats their third consecutive victory. The streak is Montana State’s longest since opening the season with five consecutive wins.
“It’s nice to be in,” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “We are starting to play some great basketball. We’re starting to put all the pieces together and it’s happening on the defensive end, as well as on offense.”
Also in double-digits for the Bobcats were Kati Burrows 19, Joanna Hixon 14, and Jana Smith 11. For the game, Montana State (13-13, 5-8) shot 53 percent from the field, including 65 percent in the second stanza. The Bobcat defense limited Portland State (6-21, 3-10) to 36 percent, including just 27 percent in the opening period.
Trailing 10-8 in the early moments, the Bobcats went on a 26-6 run to take a 34-16 advantage at the 4:42 mark following a pair of Hutchison free throws. MSU entered intermission with 35-25 lead.
In the second period, the Bobcats built their largest lead at 72-49 with 6:35 left on a Burrows basket.
