Bobcat Men’s Tennis Team Cruises Past Grizzlies

“We had a very solid Saturday,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “The Grizzlies are a much improved team and all of our matches were hard-fought.
“We are playing with a lot of confidence and the top half of our ladder, in my opinion, is the best in the Big Sky Conference.”
MSU was paced on Saturday by No. 1 singles standout Federico Ueltschi. The sophomore from Mendoza, Argentina notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over UM’s top player, Jan Steenkamp. Ueltschi also posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over LCS’ Dmintri Verabyou.
Ueltschi, who is ranked 71st in the most recent ITA listing, ran his overall record to 23-5 and 12-2 in dual action.
The Bobcats also received strong play at Nos. 2, 3, and 4, where Marek Gebicki, Tej Chigateri and Braden Olson also posted two victories.
The Bobcat women’s team dropped a 5-2 decision to Montana on Friday, before turning around and defeating Lewis-Clark State 3-2 on Sunday morning.
“We weren’t ready to go against Montana,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “But, give the kids credit, they turned around and defeated a good Lewis-Clark State squad, who had beaten Montana.”
