THIS WEEK’S ACTION
Montana State opens the outdoor season this weekend by splitting the squad. Most of the team will head to Missoula for the Montana Open, while seven Bobcats head to California’s Bay Area for the Stanford Invitational. This weekend’s action opens MSU’s outdoor season, which carries through early June and the NCAA Championships.

At Stanford
Six Bobcats head to the West Coast this weekend for the Stanford Invitational, March 26-27 in Stanford, CA. Casey Jermyn will compete in the 10,000m, his first crack at an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. The 10,000 is the only event not offered at the regional championships. The automatic standard is 29:00, and Dale Kennedy feels Jermyn is ready to run not too far off that mark but within the provisional qualifying range of 29:30. Throwers Blake Jackson (shot put, weight throw, discus), Tanner Rauck (shot put), Hannah Furlong (shot), and Jen Allen (shot, discus, hammer) will compete at Stanford. Sprinter Steve Heberly will also compete, on the strength of his all-conference performance at the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
At Montana
The remainder of the Bobcat team will compete on Saturday in Missoula. Decathletes Brad Benjamin, Steven Hodge, and Jim Evans will compete in the multi-event competition Friday and Saturday, while about 45 other athletes will compete in Saturday’s full-scale meet.
Personnel Palaver
One high-profile Bobcat, distance runner Kevin Clary, will miss the weekend with a knee injury. Erin Jones, a Big Sky champion during the indoor season, will redshirt this season due to a shoulder injury. Throwers Josh Henigman, Lisa Lord, Kelli Phillip and Megan Lee will all redshirt, along with distance runners Caleb Ambrose and Jonathan Gibson.

“This weekend’s meets are non-scoring meets, and they give us the opportunity to get outside and get acclimated. A lot of kids compete in outdoor events that aren’t offered indoors, and the team has been off for five weeks, so we’re really in a transition period from indoors to outdoors. I sense that there is a lot of excitement, and also some anxiety, especially among younger kids and kids who didn’t compete indoors. For the most part, we’re all looking forward to the weekend. We’ve had a great week to get ready, in fact it may have been the best week of weather leading into the outdoor season that we’ve had since I’ve been here. The weather may not be really friendly in Missoula this weekend, but it will be doable.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 25th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.
