Montana State Tennis Teams Head to Missoula

The MSU women’s team will face the Lady Griz at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 26, before meeting Lewis-Clark State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Montana State men’s squad is currently 9-3 in dual action this season, including a perfect 4-0 mark in Big Sky Conference action. Picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll, the ‘Cats have already knocked off two teams (Northern Arizona and Idaho) picked ahead of them in the rankings, along with a victory over Weber State.
MSU is paced by No. 1 singles player Federico Ueltschi (velt-she). The sophomore from Mendoza, Argentina, is 21-5 overall and ranked 71st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITC) rankings. Ueltschi is the only Big Sky Conference player ranked in the nation’s top 100.
The Bobcats also have a strong tandem at Nos. 2 and 3 singles as Marek Gebicki and Tej Chigateri have combined for a 32-8. At No. 4 singles, junior and Missoula native Braden Olson has posted an 8-4 mark in dual play.
“It’s going to be a grueling Saturday as we play back-to-back matches,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “Montana has their top player back and they are much improved from last season. It’s going to be a great battle.”
The Montana State women are 5-11 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky Conference action. The Bobcat women are coming off a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Idaho State last weekend in Pocatello.
MSU is led by No. 1 singles standout Vera Vasileva. The native of Russia is 8-7 in dual singles matches. Vasileva also combines with Ivette Duran at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem has posted a 7-4 record.
“We gained a lot of confidence with our win at Idaho State,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “It’s was especially nice to see our younger kids pull us through. This weekend will be another tough test.”
