Senior throwers Blake Jackson and Jen Allen each earned two of MSU's Indoor Track and Field Awards, Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy announced Friday. The list of award winners tilts toward throwers and home-grown student-athletes. Five of the 10 award winners are throwers, while eight of the 10 hail from Montana. The other two are from neighboring Wyoming.
"I think it speaks well of our program that we have so many Montanans playing a prominent role," Kennedy said. "We've emphasized using home-grown talent. These awards also show how strong Mike Carignan's throwers were during the indoor season." MSU became the first school in league history to capture the first five spots in any one event when the 'Cats finished first through fifth in the women's weight throw.
Jackson, from Glenrock, Wyo., and Allen, from Billings, earned Top Gun Awards for leading the men's and women's teams in scoring. Allen scored 100 points for the women's team this winter, while Jackson scored 72 points for the men, edging distance runner Casey Jermyn by one point.
Jackson and Allen also won Outstanding Field Events Performer awards. Allen shared the women's honor with junior Erin Jones, who finished with the 17th-best pentathlon performance in the nation. The Harlowton native won the Big Sky title in that event, and was also an all-conference performer in the triple jump and hurdles.
Jermyn, a junior from Plains, won Outstanding Track Performer honors, earning a Big Sky championship in the 5,000 meters. Ariana Lee, a senior from Lander, Wyo. capped her sensational career with a thrilling performance at the Big Sky indoor meet. She won the 5,000 meters with a school record performance, and was named the meet's outstanding woman track athlete, and earned MSU's Outstanding Track Performer honors.
Kelsey Kirkpatrick from Ryegate and Karen Helvey from Thompson Falls shared Women's Outstanding Freshman honors. Kirkpatrick scored 68 points this year, finishing fifth in the Big Sky 400 meters. She improved by over two feet in the triple jump this year, and by over a foot in the long jump. Helvey was third in the weight throw at the Big Sky Championships. Steve Heberly from Havre was the outstanding men's freshman, earning all-conference honors in the 200 meters.
Josh Henigman was named the Most Improved men's athlete. He finished with a provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw, improving by nearly five feet in that event this season. Hannah Furlong also improved in the weight throw by nearly five feet, finishing second in the Big Sky and posting setting her personal best mark every week of the season.
