And Friday night, in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament, the 5-9 graduate of Blackfoot High School finished with nothing left in her tank, except for the league’s first-ever triple-double in postseason play and a Montana State record 14 assists.
Hutchison recorded 14 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds, as the ‘Cats came up short in a 63-56 loss to Idaho State in semifinal action.
Montana State (15-14), playing without the services of leading scorer Kati Burrows and third leading scorer Jana Smith, competed with abandon against Idaho State (20-7), a squad that had swept the Bobcats in the regular-season.
MSU held a 29-22 advantage at intermission, but ISU opened the second stanza on a 13-4 run to take a 35-33 lead following a Larraine Barron bucket at the 14:39 mark. The lead then changed hands four times, before the Bengals pushed a 52-51 advantage to a five-point lead with 1:12 remaining on a pair of Molly Hays free throws.
The Bobcats cut the lead to 56-54 on a Whitney Connolly three-pointer with one-minute left, but ISU went seven-of-eight from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the victory and move them into the Big Sky title game on Saturday night.
Also pacing the ‘Cats were Hillary Scott and Joanna Hixon—the two MSU players who replaced Burrows and Smith in the line-up. Scott ended with a team-high 15 points, including a 7-of-13 effort from the field, while Hixon finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
ISU was led in the victory by Hays with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Annie Anderson ended with 14 points and 16 boards.
For the game, MSU shot 42 percent from the field, while holding Idaho State to 31 percent, including and icy 24 percent in the opening stanza. ISU held a 49-37 advantage on the boards.
Idaho State also ended the night converting 25-of-34 from the line, while MSU went four-of-11.
Montana State finishes its season with its fourth consecutive winning campaign.
