Brown Points Way for Win

Sometimes, all it takes is a few words.
"After the game Thursday, I had a talk with Jason," said MSU point guard Frank Brown, referring to a five-point, four-turnover effort against Eastern Washington in MSU's heartbreaking 64-61 loss. "Coming from a game like that, I really wanted to bounce back."
As it turned out, Erickson's encouragement and Brown's desire manifested itself in a 14-point game in which Brown "played a great floor game," in MSU coach Mick Durham's estimation. He had only one assist and one turnover, but snagged six rebounds to complement his double-figure scoring night.
After playing within himself as MSU's playmaking point guard for nearly 36 minutes, Brown found himself at the game's crucial juncture with 4:33 minutes left. "I just stepped up and made it," Brown said of his open three-pointer that gave the Bobcats a two-point lead that it wouldn't relinquish.
"That shot was the huge," Durham said. "Frank played within himself, and when he had the open shot he knocked it down."
More than the heroics of a huge shot, or the artistry of a point guard playing his best, Brown and running mate Jason Erickson found the electricity that two standout guards staying within their roles can sometimes generate.
"It's fun playing with (Erickson)," Brown said with a smile. "I'm glad I'm on his team."
Brown ran the fast break superbly on Saturday night, as he did in the second half of Thursday night's loss. "Frank really did a nice job pushing the ball, but more importantly he found our shooters when he needed to," Durham said.
Brown's playmaking helped spring Erickson for another dominating effort, as the senior from Eagle River, Alaska, poured in 21 points. "I know when he's going to shoot, when he's going to pass," Brown said. "Sometimes he'll do things I haven't seen before."
Durham and Brown each called Saturday night's win important. "We know what's ahead of us," Durham said, referring to MSU's two-game road trip to Idaho State and Weber State next weekend, which is followed by a single-game at Montana in two weeks.
"We had to get this win to build our confidence," Brown said. "Coach said don't give up, and we didn't."
