Bobcat Skiers Finish Ninth at New Mexico Invitational

The Bobcats were paced in the invitational by Smaranda and Alex Munteanu. The sisters from Stratton, Vermont finished seventh and 16th overall in the giant slalom. Smaranda Munteanu notched a two run time of 2:14.60, while older sibling Alex posted a clocking of 2:15.87. Julie Little won the race in a time of 2:12.74.
In the women’ slalom event, Smaranda Munteanu finished 21st overall, with Alex Munteanu placing 23rd.
MSU’s lone entrant in the men’s events, Tyler Smedsrud, had his best result of the season with an 11th place finish in the slalom race in a two-run time of 1:39.77. The Red Lodge native finished 20th in the slalom event with a combined clocking of 2:10.81.
In the Nordic races, Chris Coe paced the Bobcats finishing 16th in the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle with a time of 29:57.2, while teammate Travis Hansen placed 26th in 31:48.2. In the 10-kilometer classic race, Coe placed 19th, while Hansen was 22nd overall.
The MSU women’s nordic squad was paced by Mandy Bowden in the five-kilometer classic event. Bowden finished 19th overall in a time of 20:50.5, while teammate Rachel Goldstein placed 24th in a clocking of 21:51.1. In the five-kilometer freestyle, Bowden was 27th overall, while Goldstein finished 30th.
The University of New Mexico won the team title with a combined score of 590, followed by Denver 569, Colorado 535, Utah 461, Nevada 382, Western State 274, Whitman 221, Alaska-Anchorage 213, Montana State 208 and Boise State 111.
Due to travel, the Bobcats did not field a full squad. MSU will compete at the University of Colorado Invitational, Feb. 20-21.
