Smith Notches Career-High to Lift Bobcats Past Sacramento State

The win gives Montana State (12-13, 4-8) its first back-to-back Big Sky Conference victories of the season. The victory, coupled by a Northern Arizona loss to Montana, moves the Bobcats into fifth place in the league.
Smith, a 5-foot-7 native of Ronan, converted 10-of-13 from the field and went five-of-six from three-point range. Smith carried the Bobcats in both periods, scoring nine points on three triples to help MSU rally from an early deficit in the first half. In the second stanza, she scored 13 consecutive points, expanding a six point Bobcat margin to 60-45 with 2:30 remaining in the game.
“I’m happy for Jana (Smith),” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “She’s been a little frustrated with her scoring and tonight she was very aggressive and hit some big-time shots.”
For the game, the Bobcats shot 46 percent from the field, including a red-hot 65 percent in the final period. The Montana State defense limited Sacramento State (1-25, 1-12) to 25 percent from the floor, which included 19 percent in the second half. MSU also held a 48-35 advantage on the boards.
Also contributing to the MSU win was Sheila Hutchison, who notched a career-high nine assists, while adding seven points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Hornets were paced in the loss by Katelyn Ciampi with 14 points and ten rebounds.
MSU will host Portland State on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
