Bobcats Second, Third in Indoor Meet

Senior Ariana Lee, competing in her final home competition for Montana State, and junior Erin Jones earned top individual honors as Montana State's women finished second at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Indoor Championships in Bozeman on Saturday.
Lee, a senior from Lander, Wyo., earned Co-Women's Track Athlete of the Meet honors, while Jones was Field Event Athlete of the Meet. MSU's women scored 134.5 points to finish second behind Weber State (146). The Bobcat men finished third with 100.5 points, behind Weber State (165.5) and Idaho State (101).
Lee became the first athlete to earn top individual honors in two straight meets since MSU's Christy Otte in 1996-97, and she shared the honor with Ida Nilsson, the 2001 Big Sky Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet. Athlete of the Meet honors are bestowed by Big Sky Conference coaches.
Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy said he and his staff is proud of both Jones and Lee. "Ariana Lee was a warrior," he said. "That's a very difficult triple she attempted, and she competed at a very high level. Erin Jones also did a great job, competing in five individual events and five more in the pentathlon."
MSU's sensational senior thrower Jen Allen turned in another eye-popping performance. Allen won the women's weight throw, and did so in spectacular fashion. Allen and four of her teammates took the top five spots in the women's weight throw, the first time a school has ever gone 1-2-3-4-5 in one event. Coupled with MSU's 1-2-3 performance in the shot put the day before, Montana State became the first team in league history to post 1-2-3 finishes in two events in the same meet.
"What Mike Carignan's throwers did was spectacular," Kennedy said. "Jen Allen's two wins, and two provisional marks, are indicative of the kind of athlete and competitor she is. But the thing that's not as obvious is the type of leader she is. Jen's leadership really made itself evident this weekend, because that group of kids, some of them very young, was dominant."
Jones won the pentathlon, finished second in the 55 hurdles, and third in the triple jump, in which she set a school record. Lee finished first in the 5,000 meters, third in the mile, and third in the 3,000. Jones won the shot put and women's weight throw. One the men's side, Casey Jermyn followed his Friday night win in the 5,000 with a 3,000-meter championship on Saturday.
"My hat is off to Weber State," Kennedy said. "Their women's team is outstanding, and their men's team turned in a dominant performance. I'm very proud of how our teams performed. We misfired in a few spots, but that happens. We had a lot of kids step up and have tremendous performances."
