Bobcats Solid After Day One

Dale Kennedy knew his Montana State women's track and field squad needed a big first day, and a pair of reliable veterans came through.
"Jen Allen, what a great performance in the shot put," Kennedy said. "And Ariana Lee comes out and defends her 5,000 meter title. We put ourselves in position to be in this meet tomorrow."
Montana State's women scored 59 points during the first day of the 2004 Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Indoor Championships to claim first place, while the men's team is in second with 44.5 points, four points behind Weber State. "We knew the women needed a big first day on the women's side, and the men are staying competitive."
Four Bobcats won championships on day one of the indoor championship meet, led by a strong distance showing. Casey Jermyn, a junior from Plains, won the men's 5,000, while senior Ariana Lee, from Lander, Wyo., won the women's 5,000. Lee's championship was her fourth Big Sky title, after winning both the 3,000 and 5,000 at last year's indoor meet, and the 10,000 meters outdoors last spring. Jermyn's title was his second, after last spring's 10,000 meter title.
"We needed out distance runners to come through in a big way, and they did," Kennedy said. "We don't have a lot of depth in the distance events on the women's side, so Ari's performance was huge. And Casey ran really well."
Senior thrower Jen Allen won her first Big Sky title in the shot put, extending her school record and NCAA Provisional mark. Harlowton's Erin Jones won the first-ever Big Sky Pentathlon title.
