Below are notes and quotes from the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Indoor Championships, held this weekend in Bozeman...
Men’s Weight Throw: Karim Chester’s throw of 64-5 set a Big Sky Championship Meet record in his only mark of the competition. From Karim Chester: “I was going for a big throw to push myself up the top 10 national chart. I just couldn’t stick the finish, that’s what I was going for. It feels pretty good. We’ve been competing indoors in Flagstaff for three months, so it feels good to come away with a medal.”
Men’s Long Jump: Sac State’s Brandon Parker won on his final jump. From Brandon Parker “I was really sick coming into this meet. I’ve had a lingering injury in my lower back. I felt really flat today, but I just tried to give it everything I’ve got on the last jump. I’m lucky Wylie scratched (on a long jump), to be honest.”
Women’s 55: Ena Shemi of Sac State posted the best mark in the Big Sky this season (7.03) in the prelims.
Men’s 55: Wiley King of Weber matched the Big Sky’s best mark of the year (6.44) in the prelims… the person whose mark he matched, Jason Lejander of NAU, finished second (6.48).
Women’s Pentathlon: Erin Jones of MSU is the first-ever Big Sky Pentathlon champion. From Erin Jones On running easily in the 800 -- “We figured out the points so I knew what I had to do to hold first place. I just had to make sure I won it. I had some good events and some bad events, which is normal for the multis. In my first pent of the year I was strong all the way through, which is unusual. There’s nothing you can do about a bad event, so you just get ready for the next one.” On finishing 1-2-3 with two UM athletes -- “I wanted it to happen with us three Montana girls (finishing all-conference). I don’t have anyone I compete with on my team, so that was just like having two teammates up there with me.”
Men's 200: Jerome Milner of Weber posted a Big Sky-leading mark.
Women's Shot Put: Jen Allen's mark is the fourth-best in Big Sky history, improves her school record, and is a Fieldhouse record... Hannah Furlong's mark is the second-best in school history. "It's about time. It's my first Big Sky Championship in five years. I've been to the NCAAs, I've set school records, but this is my first Big Sky title. It's Awesome."
Women's 5,000: From repeat champion Ariana Lee of MSU "I ran a conservative race, and I knew I was putting all my eggs in the last three laps. I went into the last three laps knowing I had to put a kick on and lose her. It's nerve-wracking, but it's like coach says, this race is the first two-thirds head and the last third heart."
