Bobcat Throwers Lead the Way

You could call it getting in a zone. You could call it a dominant performance. Montana State senior Jen Allen calls it "Bobcat synergy."
MSU track coach Dale Kennedy has no idea what to call the performance turned in by his team's performance on Friday in the women's shot put competition during the first day of the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. But as long as they keep doing it, he doesn't care.
"What an amazing performance by Jen Allen and the throws crew," Kennedy said after Montana State swept the first three places of the women's shot put competition on Friday. That points bonanza helped MSU build a 17-point lead over second place Weber State in the chase for the Big Sky women's title. "They really feed off each other, and they are capable of some big performances."
Allen was the beneficiary of much of that karma. The senior from Billings improved her school record and NCAA provisional qualifying mark, winning the competition with a best toss of 51-3.75. It wasn't the mark that she was most interested in, though.
"It's about time," Allen said with a huge smile of her first Big Sky Championship. "After five years, it feels awesome."
Allen's impressive mark, the fourth-best in Big Sky Conference history, wasn't what Kennedy marveled about after the competition. "She had an absolutely awesome series of throws," he said. "She was way out over 50-feet on all of them. It was an amazing performance."
As it usually goes with the current MSU women's throws crew, Allen's teammates fed off her performance. Junior Hannah Furlong posted a season's best 48-2.5, the second-best mark in school history, to finish second. Megan Lee finished third with a mark of 45-4.25, her best mark by two feet.
"We really feed off each other," Allen said. "When one person goes off, that's all it takes. It's amazing."
The Bobcat women's throws crew will have a chance to make more magic on Saturday in the women's weight throw. MSU stands 1-2-3-4-5-7-8 in the weight throw entering the event.
