THIS WEEK’S ACTION
Montana State hosts the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, February 27-28, in Worthington Arena. While Weber State comes to town as strong favorites in both the men’s and women’s meets, MSU is expected to compete for league titles on both sides. The multi-event competitions begin at 9:00 am each day.

Pent/Hep Debut
The 2004 Big Sky Track Championships come to Bozeman’s Worthington Arena on February 27-28. The first-ever conference championship multi-event competition will begin at 9 am each day, with the men competing in the heptathlon and the women the pentathlon.
Home Sweet Home
The host role has been a productive one for the Montana State track and field teams in recent years. The MSU women’s team won Big Sky titles during the 2001 indoor meet, and the 2003 outdoor championships, both held in Bozeman.
League Leaders
Jen Allen leads the Big Sky in the shot put (50-6) and weight throw (61-10.5); Michelle Hodge leads the league in the pole vault (12-7); Ariana Lee is second in the 3000 (9:51.10) and the 5000 (17:28.98); Erin Jones is second in the 55 hurdles (8.06), third in the high jump (5-6), fourth in the triple jumpe (38-1.25), and fifth in the long jump (18-5.75); Lynn Craver is second in the weight throw (56-7.5); Hannah Furlong is second in the shot put (47-5); and Cara Greyn is third in the weight throw (56-1.25) and the shot put 45-9.75). Montana State throwers Blake Jackson and Jen Allen have each earned Big Sky Field Event Athlete of the Week honors thre times this year -- January 27, February 2, and February 17. They are the league’s only three-time winners this year.

“The bad news is that we couldn’t fill our 25-person rosters on the men’s or women’s side, but the good news is we have a lot of highly-ranked kids with outstanding point-scoring potential. We enter into the meet as legitimate contenders for both the men’s and women’s championships. The power poll projects us second on the men’s side and third on the women’s side. That is based on dual scoring, but I think it’s interesting because our men have climbed up from fifth not too long ago. Everyone knows that the form chart never holds exactly, and that’s the beauty of sport, but it’s interesting to look at those projections. There are some places we really have to get it done. We have to maximize our points in the throwing events, the distance events, and in the women’s jumps. We thought the men’s team would be competitive, but we thought the women’s team would be in developmental mode this year. They’ve developed faster than we thought, but a lot of that has to do with our jumps crew of Erin Jones, Cassie Nollmeyer, and Kelsey Kirkpatrick. Those kids can score in several different evets. We need to maximize our points, and also hope for some help from other teams in certain events.”

MSU athletes stand 1-2-3-4-5-7-8 in the women’s weight throw standings this week. “I know schools hope to break us up in the throwing events, but our women are looking to sweep the women’s weight throw. I don’t think that’s ever happened in an event in the Big Sky,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy.
Multiple Threat
MSU junior Erin Jones’ versatility is on display during multi-event competitions, but she has also dominated several individual events. Jones is 1st in the Big Sky pentathlon, and also in the 55 hurdles. She is also third in the triple jump and high jump and fourth in the long jump.
Four for Four
MSU jumper Kelsey Kirkpatrick had a terrific weekend at the MSU Dual Meet Invitational last weekend. The freshman from Ryegate set personal bests in the 55 hurdles (8.58), the 400 (57.62), the triple jump (39-4), and long jump (17-9). “Wow,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. “She’s really come along well, but to put it all together so well so fast is amazing.”
That Championship
Feeling
Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy says there is no substitute for championship meet experience. “I think there’s no substitute for that kind of experience,” Kennedy said. “That’s the one element that is so critical. The kids with that kind of experience are the ones that can stay calm in the heat of battle, and the ones without that experience can find their performance inhibited.” MSU has a pair of multiple-time returning champions. Ariana Lee won last year’s 3,000 and 5,000 meter races in Flagstaff, earning Track Athlete of the Meet honors, while Blake Jackson won the 2002 shot put title (he redshirted last year), and has won five titles altogether, including outdoor championships. Pole vaulter Michelle Hodge is the defending indoor pole vault champion, as well.
Youth to be Served
Montana State brings a talented young group of sprinters into this year’s meet on the men’s side. Freshmen Brandon Roosevelt, Steve Heberly and Ty Norris comprise MSU’s sprints crew. “This is an area that doesn’t have a lot of experience,” Kennedy said, “but I’m excited to see how they compete. This group could be our deepest, most talented sprints group in a long time. Kennedy also sees some hidden points in his men’s sprints crew. “That is a stronger area for us than it looks like on paper. I don’t think those guys have been on at the same time yet. If they are, we can score some serious points in the sprints.”
Throwing their Weights Around
If his career ended before this year’s Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Indoor Championships, Blake Jackson’s and Jen Allen’s careers would be regarded as two of the finest in the history of Montana State track and field. With this week’s indoor track meet, and throughout the remainder of the upcoming outdoor season, Jackson and Allen have the opportunity to accomplish even more remarkable things. Jackson is a returning indoor champion (from 2002) who has scored 26 career indoor points, placing him 16 points from becoming only the fourth thrower in league history to join the league’s top 20 scorers. Allen is 17 points from moving into the career top 20, which would make her the second-most prolific indoor scorer in Big Sky history.
Return Engagement?
Ariana Lee won’t just be chasing a talented pack of Big Sky distance runners this weekend, she’ll be in pursuit of history. Lee is attempting to become the third Big Sky runner to win Athlete of the Meet honors in consecutive indoor championship meets, joining MSU’s Christy Otte, who won three straight MVP honors, and Montana’s Kris Schmitt. Lee has 29 points, nine from joining the league’s top 32 scorers.

Ariana Lee won last year’s 3,000 and 5,000 meter races in Flagstaff, earning Track Athlete of the Meet honors, while Blake Jackson won the 2002 shot put title (he redshirted last year), and has won five titles altogether, including outdoor championships. Pole vaulter Michelle Hodge is the defending indoor pole vault champion, as well.
Youth to be Served
Montana State brings a talented young group of sprinters into this year’s meet on the men’s side. Freshmen Brandon Roosevelt, Steve Heberly and Ty Norris comprise MSU’s sprints crew. “This is an area that doesn’t have a lot of experience,” Kennedy said, “but I’m excited to see how they compete. This group could be our deepest, most talented sprints group in a long time. Kennedy also sees some hidden points in his men’s sprints crew. “That is a stronger area for us than it looks like on paper. I don’t think those guys have been on at the same time yet. If they are, we can score some serious points in the sprints.”
Throwing their Weights Around
If his career ended before this year’s Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Big Sky Indoor Championships, Blake Jackson’s and Jen Allen’s careers would be regarded as two of the finest in the history of Montana State track and field. With this week’s indoor track meet, and throughout the remainder of the upcoming outdoor season, Jackson and Allen have the opportunity to accomplish even more remarkable things. Jackson is a returning indoor champion (from 2002) who has scored 26 career indoor points, placing him 16 points from becoming only the fourth thrower in league history to join the league’s top 20 scorers. Allen is 17 points from moving into the career top 20, which would make her the second-most prolific indoor scorer in Big Sky history.
Return Engagement?
Ariana Lee won’t just be chasing a talented pack of Big Sky distance runners this weekend, she’ll be in pursuit of history. Lee is attempting to become the third Big Sky runner to win Athlete of the Meet honors in consecutive indoor championship meets, joining MSU’s Christy Otte, who won three straight MVP honors, and Montana’s Kris Schmitt. Lee has 29 points, nine from joining the league’s top 32 scorers.
