Munteanu Sisters Lead Bobcats to 7th Place Finish at Colorado

MSU’s Smaranda Munteanu, a freshman from Stratton, Vermont, finished third overall in the giant slalom with a two-run time of 2:07.35, while older sister Alex Munteanu placed eighth in a time of 2:07.35. Utah’s April Mancuso won the GS crown by a half-second over Munteanu.
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Crystal Wright, 16th, 2:08.74; Catherine Baskins, 21st, 2:09.93; Andrea Drew, 25th, 2:12.28; Rebekah Levine, 26th, 2:13.73; Brenna Kelleher, 29th, 2:14.7; Polly Hopkins, 34th, 2:17.42; and Hilary Turner, 35th, 2:18.06.
In the slalom event, MSU was led by Alex Munteanu, who finished 13th overall in a time of 1:40.28.
In men’s giant slalom action, the Bobcats were led by freshman Tyler Smedsrud, who placed 29th in a clocking of 2:07.81. He was followed by Robbie Massie, 30th, 2:09.17; and Wes Powell, 34th, 2:19.02.
In the slalom race, Smedsrud again paced the Bobcats placing 19th in a time of 1:59.74.
In Nordic competition, Bobcat standout Emily Robins led the MSU contingent finishing a season-best seventh in the 10-kilometer freestyle event and 18th in the five-kilometer classic race.
The Montana State men’s team was paced by Christian Coe, who placed 18th in the 10-kilometer classic event and 20th in the 15-kilometer freestyle.
The University of Denver won the CU Invitational with 583 points, followed by Colorado 560, New Mexico 539, Utah 429, Nevada 391.5, Alaska-Anchorage 371, Montana State 296.5, Western State 225, Whitman 198, and Boise State 47.
