Colorado State's size advantage over Montana State was obvious entering Tuesday night's game, but the Rams used sharp shooting from the perimeter to beat Montana State 78-53 in Fort Collins.
CSU shot a blistering 67% in the first half en route to a 54% shooting night, including a 9-for-18 effort from three-point range. It was the first time this season an opponent had shot better than 50% against MSU. The Rams, who boast three seven-footers and another at 6-10, out-rebounded Montana State 37-28.
"I thought that was one of the big differences in the first half, the way their guards shot, especially when they broke it open," Durham said. "We had to gamble a little and try to take away their inside and hope the guards wouldn't hurt us. Their guards had been so-so this year, but they really got it going."
Colorado State's Andrew Patterson led five Rams in double-figures with 12 points. Casey Durham led MSU with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, while Nick Dissly had 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists for the 'Cats.
Durham said his team needed to shoot better early to stay around. "We didn't shoot it well enough," he said. "The difference in the first half was that we had to knock down a few shots, and we couldn’t. It got away from us in the first half, and we looked a little tired, but I walk away feeling like for the most part we held our own in the second half."
