Montana State’s (4-3) Hillary Scott converted a field-goal at the 3:10 mark of overtime to give the Bobcats a 74-71 advantage. However, the Pilots answered with consecutive baskets by Amy Botto and Whitney Grant to give Portland (3-5) the lead for good.
“We put ourselves in a good position to win in overtime, but we just didn’t execute down the stretch,” said MSU interim coach Greg Kudrna. “With Kati (Burrows) in foul trouble, I was very happy to see everyone pick up the slack and give us a good effort.”
Burrows was saddled with foul trouble the entire game playing only 14 minutes. In that time, she recorded 14 points on seven-of-11 from the field.
Picking up the scoring output for the Bobcats were Scott with a career-high 20 points, while Scotta Morton added 14, and Briana Fields, who notched her first career double-double, with ten points and ten rebounds.
“I was very happy with the play of Briana Fields,” Kudrna said. “She really came in and gave us a spark.”
Montana State held a 37-35 advantage at halftime, and built the margin to 51-42 following a Scott basket with 11:50 remaining in the game. The Pilots went on a 15-2 run over the next five-minutes to stake a 57-53 lead following a Nicole Rowe field-goal.
MSU answered back with a 13-6 run to take a 66-63 advantage on a Burrows lay-in with 2:23 left in regulation. UP then scored four straight to take a 67-66 lead, before a pair of Scott free-throws game MSU a 68-67 advantage. With 51-seconds remaining, Botto hit a field-goal to give the Pilots a 69-68 lead, before Scott converted one-of-two from the line with 29-seconds remaining to force overtime.
Portland had five players in double-digits led by Botto with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds.
For the game, MSU shot 41 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Pilots 47-43. However, Portland went 22-of-29 from the line, while MSU converted 12-of-16. The Bobcats also committed 23 turnovers, while UP had 18 miscues.
MSU will host Rocky Mountain on Friday.
