Bobcats Fall at San Jose

Marquin Chandler hit a short jumper with 1.2 seconds to play lifting San Jose State past the Bobcats 65-64 in San Jose on Wednesday night.
Chandler's game-winner dropped the Bobcats to 0-3 on the season, the team's first such start since 1981-82, and negated a strong MSU second half. After closing the first half with a 13-0 run, MSU led for 17 minutes in the second half, leading by as many as nine. San Jose State closed the game on a 17-7 run.
Chandler, who led the Spartans with 18 points, made a layup to give San Jose State a 63-61 lead with 31 seconds to play. After the Spartans called for a time out they didn't have, Branden Miller made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left, then nailed a three-pointer to give MSU a 64-63 lead with 19 seconds to play.
"We got the ball back with 25 or 26 seconds left down two," said Bobcat coach Mick Durham. "We ran a little ball screen, (Miller) got a good look and knocked it down. Branden made a big shot, and we needed to make a big shot. We needed one more big shot before that to give ourselves some cushion, and we couldn't get it."
San Jose State got the ball back after Miller's shot, but had trouble controlling the ball. "I didn't know if they could get it to Chandler, but they did and the kid made a big play. We left our feet, and he hit sort of an up-and-under."
With MSU leading 57-48 at the 7:41 mark, the team's biggest lead, the 'Cats missed a layup and San Jose State went on a 13-3 run and led 63-61 with 31 seconds to play. That's when Miller hit his three-pointer to give MSU the lead.
Miller finished with a game-high 22 points, while Ja'Ron Jefferson, in his first start, had 17. Marvin Moss had 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats look for their first win of the season on December 2 at home against Utah Valley State.
