Bobcats Drop Heartbreaker to SMU

Southern Methodist overcame a five-point lead in the last 22 seconds to beat Montana State 69-61 in overtime on Monday.
The Mustangs erased MSU's lead when Derek Roberts hit his only basket of the game, a three-pointer, with 12 seconds left, and Eric Castro converted a layup to tie the game with five seconds left. SMU capitalized on missed free throws by the Bobcats. MSU was three-for-eight from the free throw line in the last two minutes of the game.
"When the game is on the line you've got to trust your routine and step up and make free throws, game over," said Bobcat coach Mick Durham. "A lot of guys couldn't do that tonight."
Monday's game took several wild swings. SMU led by as many as 15 points in the first half, and led by five at the intermission on the strength of a tenacious defense. SMU held the 'Cats to just 24% shooting in the first half.
"In the first half we were kind of timid," said Bobcat point guard Frank Brown, who scored 16 points and dished out seven assists. "We didn't push the ball like we did in the second half. Once we started pushing the ball we got a lot of people open."
Those open shooters converted 56.5% of their second-half field goal tries, overcoming the lead that SMU built back to 15 points early in the second half. The Bobcats began a 17-4 run with jumpers by Brown and Marvin Moss at the 13-minute mark that culminated when MSU tied the score at 46 with seven minutes left. After a Mustang basket, MSU ran off six straight points to take a 55-49 lead with 3:11 to play.
After tying the score in the waning moments of regulation, SMU jumped on the Bobcats to begin the overtime. SMU scored the period's first eight points, and MSU scored just one basket, by Marvin Moss, and a free throw by Casey Durham, in the extra period.
"That's one of those losses that you really don't want," Brown said. "We worked so hard to get caught up. A few plays here and there, and they tied the game."
Durham said the Bobcats will learn from the game. "We're trying to learn about ourselves," Durham said, "but I'd rather learn by winning. This would have been a nice win, but in the long run, trying to get ready for the conference season, this won't make that much difference. But, it's disappointing right now."
MSU plays at San Jose State, its second straight Western Athletic Conference foe, on Wednesday night.
