Lulay Leads the Way

Adjectives to describe Travis Lulay's junior season have blown through Bozeman like a winter breeze this week... spectacular, prolific, high-octane.
Not surprisingly, MSU head coach Mike Kramer has a favorite, as well: "The best."
Kramer's contention that Lulay's season is the best a Montana State quarterback has ever had is hard to argue with. Kramer lays out the case.
"When you talk about a quarterback's effectivenes, there are a few basic tenets. First is winning. Travis has done that. He led our offense to wins early in the season before it really got untracked, and he gave our team a chance to win even when some other elements were not playing well. Travis has never been a limiting factor for this team.
"Statistically, most people look at yards, but I think you need to look at attempts and completions, particularly how they relate to interceptions and touchdowns."
Lulay has had one of the best seasons in Big Sky Conference history in that respect. He has thrown an interception once every 48.2 attempts in 2004, the best rate in Bobcat history and sixth all-time in the Big Sky. Juston Wood of Portland State threw only five interceptions in 2001, and his interception-to-attempt rate was once every 73.2. Jeff Lewis (NAU, 1994) checks in at 1-per-56.2, Dave Dickenson (UM, 1994), threw a pick ever 56.0 attempts, John Friezs of Idaho (1995) once every 53.1, Dickenson again in '95 (once every 50 attempts), and Lulay at 48.2.
Lulay's career rate is slightly high. The junior stands fourth in Big Sky history at one interception every 44.6 throws, behind only Lewis (54.7), Montana's Drew Miller (46.7) and Dickenson (46.4).
The raw numbers are also piling up. Lulay has MSU's single-career (8,578) and season (3,469) total offense records, and is in the top 10 in Big Sky history in both categories. His 7,731 career passing yards is first in MSU history, and his 3,099 yards this year is second, 409 yards from Kelly Bradley's 3,508 total of 1984 (regular season only).
