The 411:
The Montana State women’s basketball team opens its first season under interim coach Greg Kudrna on Friday at 1 pm at Air Force. Montana State faces the host Falcons, led by former MSU assistant Ardie McInelly.
On The Air:
For the third straight season Dave Cowan will handle play-by-play duties of ALL regular and postseason Bobcat games on 96.7 KISS-FM. Cowan will begin his broadcast with a pre-game show 20-minutes prior to tip-off.
Opening Up:
Greg Kudrna is in his first season as Montana State’s head coach, but has some experience with Bobcat season openers. As an MSU assistant coach the past two seasons, Kudrna and the Bobcats won their opener each season. MSU beat UC Riverside 91-66 at home last season, and topped Portland 86-74 the year before. Montana State has not played a season opener on the road since the 2000-01 season, when Frank McCarthy’s second Bobcat team was beaten at Riverside 70-65 in overtime.
The Air Force Tournament:
Montana State opens the Air Force tournament on Friday at 1 pm against the host squad, while UC-Davis and Louisiana-Lafayette face off in the other first round game. The winners and losers meet on Saturday.
Scouting The Tourney Field:
Air Force coach Ardie McInelly is in her third year at Air Force, but is no stranger to Bobcat basketball. McInelly is a former Montana State assistant under Gary Schwartz and Judy Spoelstra, was an assistant at Weber State, and was the head coach at Idaho State for five years, rolling up a 77-62 record and leading the Bengals to a Big Sky regular season title. McInelly’s Falcons were 3-25 last season, 0-14 for eighth in the Mountain West. She has three starters and six other letterwinners back this season, led by 5-8 soph. guard Letricia Castillo. UC-Davis coach Sandy Simpson leads an Aggie squad that finished 16-12 last year, and which has three starters and five other lettermen back. Louisiana-Lafayette was 13-15 last year, 7-8 in the Sun Belt. Coach J. Kelly Hall welcomes back four starters and four total letterwinners.
Coaching Carousel:
For the fourth time in the last decade, a head coach will begin an era in Bobcat basketball this fall. Tracey Sheehen (1995-99) opened her career with a win over Simon Fraser, Frank McCarthy (1999-2001) lost his opener to Idaho, and Robin Potera (2001-04) lost her opener at home to Washington in overtime.
