Call it Survival Saturday, because the Bobcats did just that.
Faced with a 17-0 defecit early in the third quarter, Montana State roared back with 20 unanswered points to take an improbable 20-17 win over winless Weber State in Bozeman on Saturday.
Survival Saturday's hero was just as improbable. EJ Cochrane, one of the trio of kickers that has battled for top Bobcat honors this season, nailed a 44-yard field goal with no time on the clock to win the game for the Bobcats.
"Day-to-day," is how Bobcat coach Mike Kramer calls his place-kicking situation, even after two perfect weeks in which Cochrane accounted for 13 total points and MSU won by a grand total of seven.
But, Kramer was effusive in his praise of Cochrane's stick-to-it nature. "The negative is that he's struggled at times. The positive is that he's never given up. He's never quit. And today, he reaped the reward."
Weber State dominated the first half. Wiley King caught a nine-yard pass with 4:43 to play in the first quarter, then Nick Chournos scored on a two-yard run. Joe Johnson's 24-yard field goal, after Weber recovered the second-half kickoff, gave the Wildcats a 17-0 lead.
But MSU answered. Justin Domineck scored on a 9-yard run with 10:40 to play in the third quarter, then Cochrane nailed a 22-yarder at 2:29, and Travis Lulay scored from five yard out at 16 seconds to tie the game. The fourth quarter was scoreless until Cochrane's walk-off game-winner.
Domineck had his best day as a Bobcat, finishing with 120 yards rushing, one touchdown, and a team-high nine catches for 61 yards. Travis Lulay was 21-for-37 for 218 yards.
MSU plays Portland State at home next week.
