It wasn't pretty, but we stayed patient and stayed within our system and we got a victory, said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. "I was happy that we established our middles and Megan Zanto and Angela Wiebe both had a great nights."
Wiebe, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, finished with nine kills, a .389 attack mark and three blocks, while Zanto chipped in nine kills, a .421 attack mark and four blocks.
Montana State (12-4, 4-1) was also led by Meggie Malyurek, who finished with a match-high 13 kills, while adding 11 digs. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 33 assists and added ten digs, three blocks and two aces.
"I was very happy with the way we finished," Malauulu said. "It got sloppy at times, but Kamber did a nice job finiding the right person to terminate the play."
For the match, MSU out-hit the Griz .240 to .115, while also holding a seven to four advantage in serving.
Montana (3-12, 0-5) was led by Claudia Houle with 13 kills and 14 digs.
MSU opened the match breaking away from a 6-all tie with five consecutive points following a Zanto kill. The 'Cats extended the lead to 17-9 on a Malyurek kill and won the opening set on a UM service error.
In game two, the Bobcats cruised to an early 7-1 lead before the Griz closed to 9-7. MSU built a 24-18 led, but once again UM responded to tie the score at 27-all. With the game knotted at 28-all, a Kim Stonehouse kill, followed by a Malyurek winner to give MSU the win.
In the final game, MSU opened with a 12-4 advantage and held the margin winning the match on a Wiebe kill.
MSU will be at Eastern Washington on Friday night.
