Ueltschi Carries Bobcat Tennis Torch

Four other Bobcat players fell in their opening round matches.
Ueltschi, ranked No. 58 in the most recent ITA poll, rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set to get capture the stanza winning five straight games. In the second set, Ueltschi held a 4-1 advantage, before Martin stormed back to tie the match. In the final set, Martin held a commanding 5-0 margin before Ueltschi fought back to win the match in a third set tie-breaker.
“Freddy is my hero,” said MSU fifth-year head coach Mike Phillips. “To come back from a 5-0 deficit in the third set is almost unheard of at this level of tennis. Freddy is playing great tennis and he is being so smart.”
Ueltschi, a junior from Mendoza, Argentina, will play Izak Van Der Merwe of Old Dominion in the round of 32.
Other MSU players at the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American didn’t fare as well. Marek Gebicki dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Central Florida’s Antonio Sierra; Braden Olson lost 6-1, 6-1 to Arkansas’ Rohan Gajjar; Tejeshwara Chigateri was defeated by Arkansas’ Matt Roberts 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; and Jake Berriochoa dropped a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 decision to DePaul’s Mark Henderson.
