Gibson Paces Bobcat Harriers to Second Place Finish, MSU Women Third

Gibson, a native of Woodinville, Wash., covered the five-mile course in a time of 24:24. Also contributing to the Bobcat attack were Tony Bachmann, eighth, 24:38; Casey Jermyn, 11th, 24:49; Josh Ricardi, 14th, 24:57; Nick Green, 29th, 25:31, Kevin Clary, 30th, 25:33; and Joe Wirtz, 32nd, 25:50.
By finishing in the Big Sky’s top ten, both Gibson and Bachmann garnered all-conference honors.
“Jonathan and Tony both had solid races,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “We have a lot of guys overcoming illness and injury, and I’m very proud that they pulled together and finished second behind a very powerful Northern Arizona team.
“It would’ve been interesting to see what would happen if we had everyone healthy,” Kennedy added. “We have a few weeks to regroup before the NCAA Mountain Region meet.”
Northern Arizona capture its second straight Big Sky title with 40 points, followed by MSU 66, Idaho State 69, Weber State 93, Montana 133, Portland State 140, Eastern Washington 145, and Sacramento State 246.
Weber State’s Nate Long captured the individual title in a time of 24:15.
The Montana State women’s team placed three in the top ten for the first time since the 1995 season. Ashley Hadway, Elisabeth Driscoll and Mayra Morgado earned All-Big Sky honors for their performances.
Hadway, a junior from Spokane, Wash., completed the three-mile course in a time of 17:30 to finish fourth overall. Driscoll, a Bozeman native, placed sixth in a clocking of 17:35, while Morgado was tenth in a time of 17:52.
Also running for the Bobcats were Kayla Larson, 21st, 18:26, Stephanie Carter, 31st, 18:48, Carrie Gottschalk, 42nd, 19:18, and Athlene Allred, 45th, 19:44.
“Our women had a tremendous day,” Kennedy said. “To get three kids in the top ten and earning all-conference honors is a special achievement. We only had one kid that ran in this race last year, so that shows you how far this team has come this season.”
Northern Arizona captured its fourth straight league title with 30 points, followed by Weber State 52, MSU 72, Montana 104, Idaho State 121, Portland State 128, Eastern Washington 167 and Sacramento State 243.
NAU’s Ida Nilsson won her fourth straight individual title in a time of 16:46.
MSU will compete at the NCAA Mountain Region meet Nov. 13 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
