Montana State 17, Idaho State 13 – October 2, 2004 – Holt Arena, Pocatello, ID
INJURY REPORT: Injuries continue to plague the Bobcats, and that bug took a costly bite out of the team on Saturday. Receiver and return specialist Brandon Roosevelt suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first half. Other than Roosevelt, the ‘Cats escaped Holt Arena without serious injury. Kory Austin returned at cornerback, and played effectively, but Kahiam Hunter and Eddie Smith are out for the season. Linebacker Jonathan Molock (ankle) missed his second straight game. The return of running back Justin Domineck and Rick Gatewood has the offense operating at full strength, sans Roosevelt.

TEAM NOTES
• The Bobcats won their Big Sky opener for the first time in three years, and only the second time in Mike Kramer’s five seasons in Bozeman
• Montana State has now won its first Big Sky road game of the season for the third time in four years, having beaten Eastern Washington in 2001 and Weber State in 2003
• Add to the list of MSU true freshman active on the varsity the name of cornerback Ryan Kelley, who is expected to be activated this week. Kelley had a strange journey Saturday, flying to Los Angeles to be with his ailing grandmother on Friday and flying into Pocatello just before game time on Saturday.
• The Bobcats and Bengals each turned the ball over once Saturday
• Idaho State’s 462 yards was the most surrendered by MSU this year, and the most allowed by the ‘Cats in a regular season game since NAU got 480 last year. Ironically, the Bobcats won both of those games.
• Saturday’s game marked the fourth time in MSU’s last seven Big Sky games that the Bobcats have held its opponent to 14 points or less
• Saturday’s win was only Mike Kramer’s second as MSU’s head coach when his team scored less than 20 points, raising his record to 2-16
• Montana State is now 15-2 under Mike Kramer when the Bobcats hold their opponent to less than 20 points
• With Homecoming in store next weekend, MSU will be looking for its third straight crowd of 12,000 or more, which would be the first time in school history the Bobcats have drawn three 12,000-plus crowds in the same season
• The news regarding Homecoming isn’t all good, though, as Mike Kramer’s Bobcats are just 1-3 in Homecoming games
• MSU ran 34 fewer plays than Idaho State on Saturday, and gained 136 fewer yards, but the Bobcats averaged more yards per play (5.5) than ISU (5.0)
• With the loss of Roosevelt, Mike Williams becomes MSU primary return man on punts and kickoffs, while Rick Gatewood starts at the slot position with Williams backing him up
• MSU didn’t pick off a pass Saturday, but it broke up 11 of Hetherington’s 52 attempts
INDIVIDUAL NOTES/PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
OFFENSE: QB Travis Lulay, 6-3, 205, Jr, Aumsville, OR
Travis Lulay had his best passing day of the season, completing 18 of his 30 attempts for 247 yards and a touchdown… he threw one interception… Lulay completed passes of 56 (to Rick Gatewood) and 55 (to Eddie Sullivan), Montana State’s longest plays from scrimmage this season… Lulay also scored a touchdown on a four-yard run, although he was held to -2 rushing yards, his first negative figure of the season.
OTHER NOTES: Chaz Guinn failed to lead the Bobcats in receiving for the first time this season, but still had four catches for 17 yards… Justin Domineck led the Bobcats in receptions Saturday, but Rick Gatewood (3-86) and Eddie Sullivan (2-82-1) turned in the biggest days… the touchdown was Sullivan’s first as a Bobcat… Justin Domineck gained 57 rushing yards for the second straight game… seven different Bobcats caught passes on Saturday, and Grant Elliott caught his first pass and carried for the first time in 2004.
DEFENSE: LB Roger Cooper, 6-3, 238, Sr, Port Orchard, WA
Roger Cooper had a dominant game Saturday, getting nine tackles, including eight solos. Cooper had three tackles for loss, including one sack, and broke up one pass. Cooper made perhaps the play of the game for the Bobcat defense. On a third-and-two from the Bengal 28 on the possession after MSU had taken a 17-13 lead, Cooper got free and sacked Bengal quarterback Mark Hetherington to force a punt.
OTHER NOTES: Corky Lindsay, in his first start as a Bobcat, led the team with 11 tackles… Lindsay also broke up three passes… Epikopo King, a linebacker playing extensively for the first time, broke up three Bengal passes, as well… Clive Lowe registered his first sack of the season, a joint effort with Brandon Eggart.
SPECIAL TEAMS: PK EJ Cochrane, 5-10, 201, Sr, Philadelphia, PA
EJ Cochrane had a perfect day Saturday, converting his only field goal attempt and both of his extra points, scoring five points in a four-point Bobcat road win over Idaho State. Cochrane’s first-quarter field goal, which opened the day’s scoring, was Montana State’s first of the year, and snapped a five-game string without a field goal that dated to last November. Cochrane had not successfully kicked a field goal since the 2002 season, and is now 4-for-4 on extra points this year, 5-for-5 in the past two seasons, and 9-for-14 in his career. Cochrane is now 5-for-9 on field goals in his career.
OTHER NOTES: Bobcat quarterback Travis Lulay had another spectacular day punting the football, averaging 47.2 yards on eight punts... Lulay pinned the Bengals inside the 20 twice, and allowed just eight yards on three Idaho State return attempts... he also completed a pass out of punt formation for the second time on the season (2-for-2), although Clayton Curley was stopped just short of a first down… it took four games, but Montana State finally kicked a field goal in 2004… Mike Williams returned kickoffs for the first time this year after Roosevelt’s injury… Saturday marked Travis Doroski’s first game without a touchback, although Idaho State’s average starting field position after kickoffs was its own 19, and twice Doroski’s kicks pinned the Bengals inside their own 20.
