Zanto committed only two hitting errors on the night- one went long and the other just missed the white line. However, it was Zanto and LeAnn Kinvig’s block of ISU’s Nikki Randall on match point that sent the Bobcat faithful home with smiles on their faces.
“How about our middles?” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu, referring to the combination of Zanto and sophomore Angela Wiebe. “They both had outstanding matches this weekend, and when they do that, it really takes the pressure off our outside hitters.”
Wiebe, a 6-foot-1 native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, finished with eight kills, a .412 attack mark and four blocks.
Montana State (15-5, 7-2) also received a big effort from the Kelly girls. Kamber Kelly dished out 33 assists, while adding eight digs, five kills, three blocks and two aces. Younger sister Kandice Kelly ended with a team-high 21 digs.
“We played very steady and consistent throughout the entire match,” Malauulu said. “We never got rattled, and that is a sign our team is really maturing at the right time.”
Idaho State (9-14, 5-4) opened the match taking a 7-3 advantage following a MSU service error. The Bengals held the lead until Montana State tied the score at 10-all. The two teams traded points, before the Bobcats broke away from a 24-24 tie with a 3-0 run. MSU closed out the opening stanza on a Meggie Malyurek kill.
In the second game, MSU opened with a 7-3 run. Idaho State battled back to tie the score at 14-all, but the Bobcats closed out the game with a 16-8 run, winning on a ball-handling error by ISU’s Martha Brinton.
The Bobcats trailed in the first two-thirds of the final game, before knotting the score at 20-all on a Kamber Kelly service ace. The game was tied ten times down the stretch before the Bobcats broke away for the final two points on a Wiebe kill and the final block by Zanto and Kinvig.
Idaho State was paced in the loss by Randall, who recorded 17 kills and five digs.
Montana State will play at Northern Arizona on Thursday night.
