Montana State Middle Blockers Pace Bobcats in Sweep

“I’m happy with the play of our middles,” said MSU second-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “One hit, and the other blocked, and that proved to be a very successful combination.”
Zanto, a junior from Helena, recorded 11 kills and a .476 attack mark, while Wiebe, a sophomore from Winnipeg, Manitoba, tallied a match-high seven blocks, to go along with nine kills.
Also contributing to the Montana State (14-5, 6-2) win was setter Kamber Kelly, who dished out 37 assists and added six kills, nine digs, two aces and three blocks. Sophomore Kim Stonehouse paced all hitters with a match-high 13 kills. Defensively, Kandice Kelly led the Bobcats with 19 digs, while Meggie Malyurek added13.
“Kamber did a nice job distributing the ball,” Malauulu said. “She really got everyone involved early and ran our offense at a high rate.”
The Bobcats opened the match taking a 10-6 lead on a LeAnn Kinvig kill. MSU built the margin to 21-16 on a Zanto kill; however, Weber State (4-19, 2-6) closed to with 24-23. MSU finished the opening set with a 6-3 run, winning the game on a Wiebe block.
In the second stanza, MSU broke away from seven early ties with an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 advantage on a Kelly kill. The Bobcats maintained their lead, and won the game following a Weber State service error.
WSU stormed out to an early 5-1 lead in the final game, before the Bobcats responded with a 15-4 run to take a 16-9 lead. MSU built the margin to 22-14 and won the match following a Wildcat ball-handling error.
Weber State was led in the loss by Lindsay Harris and Kaylie Kortsen with 11 and ten kills, respectively.
Montana State will host Idaho State on Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
