Bobcats Win in Pocatello

In the end, Montana State's defense was on the Mark.
Idaho State quarterback Mark Hetherington threw for 348 yards, his eighth career 300-yard day, but Montana State's defense kept ISU's high-octane offense off balance most of the afternoon in ringing up a 17-13 win.
"We gave up yards and surrendered all sorts of stats, but we never quit playing," said MSU coach Mike Kramer, who won for the first time as the Bobcat head coach in Holt Arena. "We brought a variety of blitzes and a variety of pressures, but Mark Hetherington still got the ball off."
While Idaho State's offense rang up the big numbers -- 462 yards, the most against MSU this season -- it was the Bobcat passing game that came up big in the fourth quarter. Eddie Sullivan's first career touchdown gave the Bobcats the win. Travis Lulay found Sullivan on a 55-yarder with 12:12 to play for the difference maker.
"Travis kept his eyes downfield and Eddie made a scramble adjustment," Kramer said. "Travis made a great throw, and that was a big play."
Montana State tied the game at 10 early in the third quarter on its longest drive of the year, spurred by its longest play to that point. Rick Gatewood's 56-yard catch-and-run from Lulay set up a three-yard Justin Domineck run. MSU's drived covered 87 yards.
Montana State's defense bent without completely snapping late in the third quarter. Idaho State moved the ball from its own 16 to the MSU three-yard line, but the 'Cats held the Bengals to a field goal.
After misfiring on MSU's first drive of the game, Lulay led the Bobcats to their only first half score on the games' second possession. He connected with Eddie Sullivan on a 27-yarder, and after three ISU stops EJ Cochrane made MSU's first field goal of the season, a 36-yarder.
Idaho State missed a field goal on its next possession, then ended the ensuing Bobcat trip with a third-down sack. The Bobcats completed a pass on fourth down, Lulay to Clayton Curley, but it was short of the first down. Facing a short field, ISU moved the ball 25 yards and converted a game-tying field goal.
