Montana State senior Jonathan Gibson seized the moment.
A native of Woodinville, Wash., Gibson captured individual honors at The Runner’s Edge Montana Invitational, Saturday morning; while at the same time guiding MSU to the team title, as well. The Bobcats were without the services of top runner Casey Jermyn; however, Gibson stepped up to win the meet covering the eight-kilometer course in a time of 24:37.4.
“Jonathan had a tremendous race,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He ran stride for stride with Eastern Washington’s Brandon Fuller, before shaking him at the end.”
Kevin Clary, who had only two workouts in the past two weeks due to illness, also had a strong performance, finishing third overall in a time of 24:51.7. Also contributing to the Bobcat victory were Josh Ricardi, fifth, 25:01.7; Tony Bachmann, seventh, 25:05.7, Caleb Ambrose, 14th, 25:31.8, and Joe Wirtz, 16th, 25:37.5.
“We had a great split between our guys and I’m really pleased with the progress and development of Caleb Ambrose and Joe Wirtz,” Kennedy said. “Without Casey in the line-up, these guys showed a lot heart and it is exciting to think what we can accomplish when we have a complete and healthy squad.”
MSU won the overall team title with 29 points, followed by Weber State 46, Montana 68 and Eastern Washington 78. The Bobcats also won all three dual meets as well.
Montana State junior transfer Ashley Hadway had her best collegiate race, capturing the individual title in a time of 22:12.6. The Bobcat women were also decimated at the top of their line-up as its top two runners Elisabeth Driscoll and Mayra Morgado did not compete.
“Ashley gave us a great effort and really ran a smart race,” Kennedy said. “She was 20th at one mile, 10th at two miles and pulled away in the final 300-meters to win the race.
“It is fun to think what we can accomplish if we have everyone running,” Kennedy said. “I was pleased with our progress, especially from freshman Carrie Gottschalk.”
Other MSU finishers included Kayla Larson, 16th, 23:25.6, Gottschalk, 18th, 23:32.1, Stephanie Carter, 23rd, 23:44.6, Ana Casillas, 25th, 23:55.8, and Athlene Allred, 28th, 24:13.0.
Weber State won the women’s team title with 28 points, followed by Montana 48, MSU 69 and Washington State 69.
