The Montana State men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in one of the premier races, the Indiana State Pre-Nationals, Saturday, Oct. 16 in Terre Haute.
In all, twenty-four teams ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes will run in the women’s 6000-meter race beginning at 10 a.m. (MST). The men’s 8000-meter event, which features thirty-four squads ranked or receiving votes, will follow at 11:50 a.m.
“This will be a huge weekend for us,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “With so many teams that are ranked or receiving votes, this will be our chance to shine. Our goal heading into this race will be to knock off teams that are in front of us in the polls.”
Both the men’s and women’s races will be divided into two separate fields due to size. The MSU women will run in the Blue Race, which features No. 1 Stanford, No. 6 Notre Dame, and No. 10 Missouri. The Bobcat men will compete in the White Race, which includes No. 2 Stanford, No. 5 Michigan, No. 8 North Carolina State and No. 9 Notre Dame.
“The guys are really looking forward to competing,” Kennedy said. “We think we’re better than No. 27 in the country. Our goal will be to beat teams above us, and teams we feel will get automatic berths to NCAA from different regions.”
For the first time this fall, the Bobcat men will field a complete squad. MSU will be paced by the 1-2-3 punch of Casey Jermyn, Kevin Clary and Jonathan Gibson on Saturday. Rounding out the group will be Josh Ricardi, Tony Bachmann, Caleb Ambrose, Joe Wirtz and Nick Green.
“This is our first chance to run everyone together,” Kennedy said. “Casey is not 100-percent, but we’re to the point in the season where he needs to run. He can help us in the line-up.”
The Montana State women’s team will also be completely healthy for the first time this season, as both Mayra Morgado and Elisabeth Driscoll return to the line-up.
“This is a great opportunity for our women to gain experience for the future,” Kennedy said. “However, we are a team that is capable of beating some of the ranked teams. We haven’t run our best group, yet.”
The Pre-National meet will serve as a tune-up for the Bobcat cross country squads, before hosting the Big Sky Conference championships, Oct. 30 at Bridger Creek Golf Course
