Montana State Spikers Upset Hornets

The 5-foot-9 setter dished out 37 assists and added 13 digs and seven kills as the Bobcats stung the Hornets 30-16, 30-19, 30-26 in front of 1,437 fans in Shroyer Gym.
“We approached the match just like we did during spring ball,” Kelly said, referring to MSU’s successful play during its off-season. “We just went out and played the game, and really didn’t look at the scoreboard very much. We just clicked and it felt great.”
The Bobcats stormed out to an early 12-8 advantage following an Angela Wiebe kill, and built the margin to 20-10 on a LeAnn Kinvig winner. Montana State (10-4, 2-1) closed out the first set on a Meggie Malyurek kill.
“That was the most complete match we’ve played in Shroyer Gym since I’ve been head coach,” said second-year mentor Miya Malauulu. “We served tough, got our block established and got Meggie and LeAnn hitting very successfully at the start of the match.
“Kamber did a great job of running the game-plan and our passing was fantastic.”
In the second set, MSU again jumped out to an early 10-6 lead following a Megan Zanto kill and expanded the margin to 20-10 following a Sacramento State (11-5, 1-1) hitting error by Sandra Bandimere. The Bobcats won the game on a block by Kinvig and Wiebe.
Sacramento State fought back in the final stanza taking a 19-14 advantage following a service error by MSU’s Sammy Krier; however, the Bobcats roared back with a seven straight points to go ahead 21-19 on a Zanto ace.
With the scored tied at 22-all, MSU recorded the next two points and kept the lead, eventually winning the match on a Zanto kill.
“The key was to get the first two games,” Kelly said. “That put the pressure on them, and even when we got down in the third game, we just kept playing and having fun.”
Offensively, the Bobcats were paced by Malyurek and Kim Stonehouse with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. MSU also had four players in double-digit digs, including Kelly 13, Kandice Kelly 13, Kinvig 12 and Malyurek 12. Wiebe paced MSU at the net with a match-high five blocks, while Zanto recorded a career-high six aces.
Sacramento State was paced in the loss by Sandra Bandimere with 10 kills and eight digs.
The Bobcats will host Northern Arizona, Saturday night.
