Danielle Cheesman notched a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds to pace Brigham Young to a 67-55 victory over Montana State, Tuesday night in Worthington Arena.
“We had a tough time defending (BYU) inside,” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “However, we battled the whole game, but just couldn’t get our shots to fall when we needed them.”
Montana State’s (7-5) Kati Burrows opened the game with two free throws, but Brigham Young (8-4) responded with a 14-0 run to take a 14-2 advantage at the 14:42 mark on a Julie Sullivan basket. BYU built its largest lead of the first stanza at 28-13 on a Melinda Johnsen field goal with 6:18 remaining in the half.
The Bobcats then went on a 9-0 run to cut the margin to 28-22 following a Whitney Connolly three-pointer. BYU answered the run and entered intermission with a 33-24 lead.
“We let them get out to an early lead and then we found ourselves constantly trying to get out of the hole,” Potera-Haskins said. “I thought when we cut the lead to six points that we had a good shot at them. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”
In the second period, BYU opened with a 7-0 run to take a comfortable 40-25 lead on a three-pointer by Kali Taylor. The Cougars built their largest lead of the game at 54-35 with 11:06 remaining on a Cheesman lay in.
Montana State rallied to cut the margin to 60-50 on a pair of Sheila Hutchison free throws at the 4:51 mark; however, BYU answered with a 7-0 run to secure the victory.
Also in double-figures for BYU were Taylor and Ambrosia Anderson with ten points, apiece. The Cougars held a commanding 47-23 advantage on the boards and converted 15-of-17 from the line, while MSU went 11-of-23 from the charity stripe.
Montana State was paced in the loss by Kati Burrows with a team-high 16 points, while Hillary Scott came off the bench to notch 12 points, including ten in the second half. Hutchison paced MSU under the boards with seven rebounds, while also adding five assists and a steal.
MSU will close out its non-conference season when they host Utah Valley State, Saturday night.
