Montana State’s Poor Shooting Leads to Lady Griz Victory

Montana (13-4, 3-0) snapped its three-game losing streak in Bozeman.
“We had a terrible shooting night,” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “I thought we gave a great effort and played good defense. I would take holding Montana to 60 points any day. Our shooting was just sour. We had good looks.”
The Lady Griz jumped out to an early 16-2 advantage following a Juliann Keller basket at the 10:48 mark of the first stanza. Montana State (8-8, 0-3) cut the margin to 18-11 on a Sheila Hutchison field goal and were within 22-15 after a Jana Smith make with 2:20 remaining. However, Keller’s basket at the buzzer gave UM a 29-18 advantage at intermission.
“I thought, particularly in the first half, and especially early that we did a good job on them,” said UM head coach Robin Selvig. “They had a hard time getting goods looks and then they couldn’t hit some shots. It was a hard-fought game, but it didn’t have a lot of flow.”
In the second period, Montana opened up a 45-28 advantage on a Deming three-pointer at the 11:42 mark and pushed the margin to 55-33 on an Amy Brooks free throw with 5:59 remaining. Montana State cut the deficit to 56-43 at the 2:14 mark on a Whitney Connolly basket, but it would be the closet the ‘Cats would get.
Aside from Deming’s exploits, junior Hollie Tyler also reached double-digits with 12 points. The Lady Griz shot 50 percent from the field and were four-of-eight from three-point range.
Montana State was paced in the loss by Kati Burrows and Jana Smith with 12 points, apiece. Senior Sheila Hutchison added a team-high nine rebounds and chipped in seven points, four steals and two assists.
MSU, who had been out-rebounded in its previous two games, ended with a 43-37 advantage under the boards. The Bobcats finished the game 16-of-65 from the field and 3-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Montana State will host Sacramento State on Jan. 29.
