Bobcat Women Await Grizzly Encounter

The Montana State women’s basketball squad will open its 2004 Big Sky home slate hosting Montana on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7:05 p.m., in Worthington Arena. The game will be televised by the MTN Network with Tom Katz and Dan Toth calling the action. Check local listings for time and channel.
On The Air:
For the second straight season Dave Cowan will handle play-by-play duties of ALL regular and postseason Bobcat games on KSCY 96.7 (The Sky) FM. Cowan will begin his broadcast with a pre-game show 20-minutes prior to tip.
Grizzly Encounter:
The 72nd meeting between the Bobcats and Lady Griz will be played Friday night in Worthington Arena. Montana enters with a 2-0 Big Sky slate after sweeping a pair of road games last weekend at Idaho State and Weber State. MSU is 0-2 after the first weekend, losing at Weber State and Idaho State. The two rivals have two non-conference common opponents this season. Both squads won at Portland, and UM defeated Western Michigan 67-51, while the Bobcats dropped an 84-62 decision to WMU at Arizona State.
Scouting The Opponents:
Montana will enter Friday night’s game on a three-game winning streak. UM has won eight of its last ten games. The Lady Griz have three players averaging double-figure scoring led by Hollie Tyler at 14.3 points per game. Also in double-digits is Julie Deming (13.1) and Katie Edwards (10.2). Tyler leads UM under the boards at 8.0 rpg. Senior point-guard Brooklynn Lorenzen is the key to Montana’s offense. Lorenzen, who is this week’s Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 assists last weekend.
Series Notes:
The Lady Griz own a 54-17 advantage in the all-time series since the 1974-75 season. Montana State has won five of the last eight meetings between the two schools, including a 2-1 mark against UM the past two seasons. Included in that total are a pair of victories over the Lady Griz in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament in 2002 and 2003.
Montana State Player of the Week:
Junior Kati Burrows was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Weber State and Idaho State. Burrows ended the weekend averaging 19 points and nine rebounds per game, while shooting 48 percent from the field and 72 percent from the line. Against Weber State, she notched a season-high 23 points, while adding a career-high 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
