Idaho State opened each half with 8-0 runs and rode the hot hand of Doug D'Amore to a 75-64 win over Montana State in Bozeman on Saturday.
Saturday's game was an exact reversal for each team. Idaho State got off to a horrible start in losing at Montana on Thursday, while the Bobcats led Weber State 18-1 in its home win the same night. Doug D'Amore led Idaho State with 28 points, and was 8-for-8 from the three-point circle.
Scott Henry got a pair of baskets in the first minute-and-a-half to key ISU's quick start, then D'Amore took over. The junior hit three quick three-pointers, finished the first half five-for-five, and was eight-for-eight from beyond the arc on the night. "When he hit his third (three-pointer), I said, 'OK, we've got to get him some more touches,'" Bengals coach Doug Oliver said. "I thought his teammates making the extra pass to get him the touches was a key."
Montana State fought its way back into the game, outscoring the Bengals 29-10 in the last 13 minutes of the first half. Erickson launched the initial 10-1 run with a three-pointer, and had 14 at halftime.
Idaho State's switching defenses and MSU's inability to get scoring from anyone other than Erickson proved to be key factors. Erickson finished with 18 points, also snagging five steals, while Calvin Ento (10) was the only other Bobcat to crack double-digits. D'Amore was joined in double-figures by Scott Henry (13), Jesse Smith (10), and Jeff Gardner (11).
"They put us back on our heels in both halves, and we couldn't fight back in the second half," Durham said. "Making two comebacks like that in the same game is almost impossible against a solid team," Erickson added.
MSU led 37-34 at the intermission, but ISU's second 8-0 run gave the Bengals an insurmountable lead. Jason Erickson got a steal and hit a jumper with 12:19 to play, but Marquis Poole keyed a 7-0 run with a three-pointer, and MSU would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Montana State falls to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big Sky with the loss, while Idaho State is now 7-10 overall, 2-1 in the conference. The Bobcats host Montana next Saturday at 7:05 pm in Bozeman.
