Despite a season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds from junior Kati Burrows, the Montana State women’s basketball team dropped its Big Sky Conference opener 78-58 to Weber State, Thursday night in Ogden.
“It came down to shooting,” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “We had some looks and missed. We missed a few lay-ups at the start and that set the tone.”
Weber State (7-7, 1-0) ended the game shooting 53 percent from the field and 73 percent (8-11) from three-point range, while the Bobcats shot 35 percent from the floor and only 19 percent from long range.
WSU was paced in the win by Julie Gjertsen with 23 points, including 16 in the opening stanza. Also in double-digits for the Wildcats was Angela Sampson with 11.
Burrows, a 5-foot-11 forward from Bozeman, converted seven-of-13 from the field and was eight-of-12 from the free throw line. Her 11 rebounds was a career-high.
“Kati (Burrows) was our only inside presence,” Potera-Haskins said. “We need to get our inside game, as well as our shooting figured out.”
Montana State (8-6, 0-1) took its first lead of the game at the 8:28 mark of the opening period on a Jaimey Tanner three-pointer. However, Weber State answered 15-5 run and entered intermission with a 41-29 advantage after Laura Porter hit a half-court trey as time expired.
In the second stanza, WSU’s Becky O’Neil hit a basket at the 15:57 mark to give the Wildcats a 48-36 lead. MSU rallied to cut the margin to 51-47 with 12:19 remaining on a Sheila Hutchison jumper, but that would be the closet the Bobcats would come to WSU as the Wildcats closed out the final ten minutes on a 24-11 run.
MSU will play at Idaho State on Saturday night.
