Montana State Freshman Smaranda Munteanu Paces Bobcat Skiers at Utah Invite

“Smaranda (Munteanu) had an outstanding day,” said MSU head alpine coach Dan Brelsford. “We had two kids in the top 13 and that’s outstanding. It will really give us some added confidence as we move onto the next race.”
Alex Munteanu, the older sister of Smaranda, finished 13th overall in a time of 2:08.62. Also contributing for MSU were Crystal Wright, 41st, 2:13.47; Catherine Baskins, 47th, 2:15.31; Rebekah Levine, 50th, 2:15.90; Andrea Drew, 53rd, 2:17.57; Brenna Kelleher, 55th, 2:19.84; and Polly Hopkins 62nd, 2:21.68.
The Bobcat women total 60 points in the giant slalom, finishing behind defending national champion Utah and New Mexico. Montana State finished the Alpine portion of the Utah Invitational in sixth place with 157.5 points.
New Mexico recorded 287 points and holds the top spot heading into the Nordic events next weekend. The Lobos were followed by Denver 275, Utah 268, Colorado 210, Alaska-Anchorage 160.5, MSU 157.5, Western State 130.5, Nevada 120, Boise State, 106.5 and Whitman 93.
The Montana State men’s team, competing in its first invitational since the 1986 season, was led by Wes Powell, who placed 37th with a two-run slalom time of 1:52.98. Powell was followed by Tyler Smedsrud, 40th, 1:53.59 and Robbie Massie, 55th, 2:05.87.
Dominik Schweiger of Denver won the individual slalom title with a clocking of 1:41.62.
MSU will compete at the University of Nevada Invitational, Jan 15-16, followed by the Nordic portion of the Utah Invitational, Jan 23-24.
