#16/15 Montana State 38, NR/#25 Gardner-Webb 3 - Saturday, September 6

INJURY REPORT: The only injury of note suffered in Saturday's game by
the Bobcats was a shoulder injury by LT Dusty Daws, who is expected to
return this week sometime and be available for the Cal Poly game.
Offensive linemen Jeff Bolton, Joaquin Echauri, and Lawrence Figueroa
are expected to be available after this week's bye.

TEAM NOTES
. Montana State has now won back-to-back home openers for the
first time since 1998 and '99, and have beaten I-AA opponents in home
openers in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1989 and '90
. Bruce Molock rushed for 120 yards on Saturday, giving the
Bobcats two different 100-yard rushers in consecutive games for the
first time since Clint Morton (October 23) and Fred Moore (October 30)
in 1993
. Montana State is now 8-0 under Mike Kramer when scoring 30
points or more.
. By intercepting on Gardner-Webb pass and recovering three
fumbles without turning the ball over itself, MSU pulled back to even in
turnover margin
. MSU has held both of its first two opponents of 2003 to less
than 300 yards of total offense
. Travis Lulay threw two touchdown passes Saturday, giving him 17
for his career and tying him with John Tetrault for eighth place in
school history
. Montana State's crowd of 11,187 on Saturday was the largest
home-opening crowd in school history, and the largest ever against a
non-Big Sky opponent
. The Bobcats' last three wins have come against nationally-ranked
I-AA opponents
INDIVIDUAL NOTES/PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
OFFENSE: OG Mataio Toilolo, 6-5, 286, Sr, Cerritos, CA
Mataio Toilolo spearheaded an offensive attack that rolled up 400 yards
against #25 Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Toilolo graded out at 96% by the
coaching staff for the second straight week, and for the second
consecutive week MSU had a 100-yard rusher (Bruce Molock, 120 yards on
14 carries). The Bobcats rushed for 228 yards as a team. Quarterback
Travis Lulay was sacked only twice, and the team had only one other
negative rushing play.
OTHER NOTES: After throwing four interceptions last week at Wyoming,
Travis Lulay was not picked off yesterday against Gardner-Webb. Lulay
has thrown two TD passes this year, both to Scott Turnquist. Bruce
Molock became the second different Bobcat to register a 100-yard game
this season.
DEFENSE: SS Kane Ioane, 5-11, 207, Sr, Billings, MT
Senior safety Kane Ioane led a dominant defensive effort, as Montana
State held #25 Gardner-Webb to three points and 290 yards of total
offense. Ioane, an All-Big Sky First Team selection and 2nd Team
All-America last year, had 13 tackles, 10 of which were solo efforts,
including one sack. He also caused a Gardner-Webb fumble.
OTHER NOTES: DE Clive Lowe has had a spectacular beginning to his career
at Montana State, getting five tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, with
1.5 sacks, and interception, and a forced fumble in his first two games.
Jon Montoya registered his 24th career sack against Gardner-Webb, moving
him into sixth place alone, one sack ahead of linemate Adam Cordeiro,
who has not yet recorded a sack this year. Cordeiro did recover his
second fumble of the season yesterday, the seventh of his career, which
moves him into a tie with Ken Lang, Clete LInebarger, and Mark Fellows
for first place in that category in school history.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Corey Smith, 5-9, 165, Sr, Federal Way, WA (Decatur)
Corey Smith exploded for one of the most memorable special teams
performances in Bobcat history on Saturday, returning a punt 49 yards
for a touchdown late in the third quarter and a kickoff 100 yards for a
touchdown early in the fourth quarter as MSU expanded a 17-0 lead to
31-3. Smith returned 2 kickoffs for 127 yards, and five punts for 104
yards, and also caught a pass for 36 yards. He is the 14th player in Big
Sky history to return a kick 100 yards, and he is the first player in
school history to return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the
same game.
OTHER NOTES: Nate Cook had a solid day punting the ball on Saturday,
averaging 36.6 yards, but was very good as MSU's kickoff man. After
replacing EJ Cochrane last week when Cochrane kicked out of bounds at
Wyoming, Cook kicked off several times near the goal line against
Gardner-Webb.
