Bobcat Spikers Knock Utah State From Ranks of the Undefeated

Freshman Nadine Goldi recorded a season-high 19 kills, while Meggie Malyurek added 17 kills and 11 digs as the Montana State volleyball team held-off a late charging Utah State squad 30-23, 30-19, 22-30, 28-30, 19-17, in second-day action at the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic.
“After a match like that I don’t feel like a rookie coach,” said MSU mentor Miya Malauulu. “We got off to a great start, but then we got too comfortable, and you can’t play that way against a good team like Utah State.”
Utah State, who entered the match 5-0 on the season, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, before the Bobcats answered to take a 10-9 margin following a Kamber Kelly kill. Montana State (3-2) continued to hold a three-point cushion, before USU tied the match at 22-all. However, it was all MSU down the stretch as the ‘Cats outscored Utah State 8-1 to win the game.
In the second set, MSU built a 17-11 advantage after a Megan Zanto kill and increased the margin to 23-16 on a Goldi put-away. The Bobcats won the game on a Zanto kill. The Aggies responded in game three, taking an 18-12 lead. MSU rallied with a 6-1 run to cut the gap to 19-18 following a Kelly and Angela Wiebe block. USU then scored five unanswered points and won the game on an Erin Cartwright-Davis kill.
The fourth stanza featured 17 ties. MSU held a late 25-22 margin following a Malyurek kill. However, USU again fought back to tie the score four more times before pulling away at 28-all to win on a MSU miscue at the net.
In the final game, Montana State jumped to a quick 4-1 advantage on a Goldi kill and then built its largest lead of the game at 12-7 on an Aggie mistake. USU then rattled off a 6-1 run to tie the game at 13-all. Down the stretch, the Bobcats served five match points before eventually winning the match following a Zuzana Cernianska hitting error.
“After we got up 2-0, I think we had the mindset that Utah State would go away,” Malauulu said. “But they didn’t. They’re too good of a team.
“Fortunately, we kept our composure and that’s an important lesson for a team that is as young as we are to learn.”
Also contributing to the MSU victory was setter Kamber Kelly, who dished out 49 assists, while adding a team-high 13 digs, eight blocks and six kills. Also in double-digit kills for the Bobcats was Zanto with 12 kills. She also added a .550 hitting percentage and eight blocks.
USU was led in the loss by Cernianska and Cartwright-Davis with 26 and 23 kills, respectively.
MSU will close out the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic against Alabama at 7:30 p.m.
