Post-Game Lead and Notes
Montana State limited its second straight opponent to less than 300 yards of total offense and snapped a three-game non-conference losing streak, topping #25 Gardner-Webb 38-3 in Bozeman on Saturday.
An enthusiastic crowd of 11,187, the largest home-opening crowd in school history, roared as senior Corey Smith returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter, and again moments later as he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Smith also caught a pass for 36 yards, giving him a school-record 240 all-purpose yards. He is believed to be the first player in school history to return a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in the same game.
As spectacular as Smith and the special teams were on Saturday, Montana State’s defense was even better. The Bobcats limited explosive Gardner-Webb to just 290 yards of toal offense, including only 94 rushing yards, sacked quarterback Nick Roberts six times, and intercepted him once. MSU forced four Bulldog turnovers, without yielding a turnover.
